Science Saturdays Science Saturdays gives the entire family a chance to explore science topics related to Naval Undersea operations and the undersea environment. Kids and parents will explore, experiment, create crafts, and tour the museum's galleries. Programs are designed for kindergarten-sixth grade, but children of all ages are welcome. Programs are from 10am to 12pm and are free to the public. For more information call John Buchinger at 360-396-5547.
January 7th: Under Pressure! In the world of the undersea, pressure is an important thing to understand. From divers to deep water submersibles, knowing about pressure is a life saver! Activities: -Make a Cartesian diver -Make a killer straw -Simulate deep water pressure -Try on a diving helmet
February 4th: Balance and Motion Join us for a balancing act as we explore the concepts of motion in the ocean. Activities: -Make your own wave tank -Create structures that balance shapes -Create rollers and predict how things will move and roll -Test a gyroscope in the galleries
March 10th: Floaters and Sinkers Why do ships float and submarines sink? We will look at how density affects the way objects react in water and other liquids. Activities: -Create and test boats in different liquids -Watch floating bubbles on dry ice -Experiment with how objects sink or float in various solutions -Create your own simple submarine
April 7th: Magnetism and Electricity The creation of a power source such as electricity is essential for the running of undersea vehicles. Electric power is generated from a variety of sources. Come explore some concepts behind electricity and magnetism this month! Activities: -Make magnets dance -Create a circuit and light a bulb or create an alarm -Have a hair-raising experience with static electricity
May 5th: Bubbles Everywhere! We will take a look at surface tension and pressure this month. Activities: -Make a giant bubble tube -Experiment with the best solutions to make your own bubble soap -Make cube-shaped and other oddball bubbles.
